My mother-in-law, Betsy, is a world class matriarch. And she does love a holiday!
Every year my husband and his siblings (and now me and our daughters) receive a “special ornament”. On Christmas Eve, before the actual big (as in Betsy-is-disappointed-if-at-least-50-people-aren’t-in-her-house kind of big) family party begins, we each get a small, carefully wrapped and thoughtfully chosen ornament. Inside is always a little treasure from my in-laws’ world travels, or a special surprise themed after this year’s personal obsession (owls anyone?) or perhaps something that will just make us laugh.
On our wedding day, my husband and I received a giant box full of these wonderful Christmas tree decorations for us to hang on our own Christmas tree. Each one is painstakenly labeled and dated. What a wonderful gift of love and personal history.
Now we give them to our own girls every year. It is fun to choose them and lovely to give them. It is a real delight to hear my 13 and 16 year olds giggle with delight when they pulls their own favorite special ornaments out of the box and hangs them on our tree.
I highly recommend this simple tradition no matter how old your children are. In the next few days, I’ll be sharing some of our family favorites. Does your family have any traditions that make your holidays more special year after year? Please share with us!
And don’t forget, it is fun to listen to Songs for a Magical Winter while it snow…
Happy everything! Xoxo – April
