Turnip Lanterns for Thanksgiving

 

Did you know that some cultures carve turnips? So cute and funny, no matter what you carve into them.  “Turnip lantern, turnip lantern, growing underneath the ground… now you are my turnip lantern shining bright, in the night.”

Here is a funny little tutorial from the Book Garnish Blog. A few of these on a Thanksgiving table would be great – bring the joy!

  1. The Mormon pioneers often had very little to spare as they were getting established in the Salt Lake valley. There is a story of one of the presidents of the church arranging for a celebration — and hanging candles from hollowed out turnips, for festive evening lighting. I think turnips are perfect for Thanksgiving!
